With passage of same-sex marriage bill in the Chamber of Deputies (lower house of its National Congress), Argentina seems poised to implement same-sex marriage. The country’s Senate is scheduled to vote Wednesday, July 14, on the bill.
Even though the Senate’s general law committee earlier this month recommended rejection of the bill, the bill continued to progress through the country’s legislative process. Argentina President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner has indicated that she will not block the bill if it is approved.
There are already four cities in Argentina who allow civil unions for homosexual couples. Last year the national government began allowing a same-sex partner of a relation that had existed for at least five years to collect pensions of a deceased partner.
If you have friends and acquaintances in Argentina please contact them and ask them to immediately get in touch with their representative in the Senate to express their concern. This bill must be defeated.
