The Washington D.C. City Council voted to legalize same-sex marriage today by an 11-2 margin. Mayor Adrian Fenty has already promised to sign the bill, at which time it goes to Congress for final approval.
The vote comes despite strong opposition from local groups and the Catholic Church. They will attempt to overturn the measure either in Congress or by public vote.
If Congress approves the bill, the city should start issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples in March.
