A Mighty Blow to the Foundation of Liberty
On Saturday we will celebrate the 239th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, when the American forefathers began to build a foundation of liberty for the newly forming United States. However, last week’s Supreme Court ruling legalizing same-sex “marriage” struck a mighty blow to that foundation of liberty, which will continue to send out cracks and crumbles for years to come.
Welcome to “Post-Christian America,” where the freedom of every church, every religious school, and every religious believer is in grave peril.
As Rod Dreher wrote in Time Magazine:
“It is hard to overstate the significance of the Obergefell decision — and the seriousness of the challenges it presents to orthodox Christians and other social conservatives. . . The Supreme Court has now, in constitutional doctrine, said that homosexuality is equivalent to race.
“The next goal of activists will be a long-term campaign to remove tax-exempt status from dissenting religious institutions. The more immediate goal will be the shunning and persecution of dissenters within civil society. This is profoundly incompatible with orthodox Christianity. But this is the world we live in today.
“Christians must understand that things are going to get much more difficult for us. We are going to have to learn how to live as exiles in our own country.
“We are going to have to learn how to live with at least a mild form of persecution. And we are going to have to change the way we practice our faith and teach it to our children, to build resilient communities.”
In these “profoundly troubling” circumstances, United Families is redoubling our efforts to protect as much religious freedom as possible, and we need your help!
Here are some things you can do:
- Please send us your most generous financial gift today. We are greatly in need of your partnership and support, in order to be able to move forward.
- Gather your family to watch “First Freedom: the Fight for Religious Liberty,” a PBS documentary which will air on BYUtv on July 3 at 4 p.m. and July 4 at 7 p.m. Mountain Standard Time. The First Freedom documentary can also be viewed online here.
- Practice your faith, teach it to your children, and help build resilient communities. The ground may be shifting, but we must all steady our footing, square our shoulders, and get to work.
Happy Independence Day to you and yours,
Laura Bunker
United Families International President
