Work protecting families and the sanctity of life at the United Nations is never easy and never ending. Opposing forces have infiltrated the UN system and comprise majorities in decision making bodies, including oversight committees like the Human Rights Committee that monitors the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and CEDAW (the Committee on the Elimination of the Discrimination against Women).

These committees are made up of representatives of member states that are parties to the treaties. The members of the committees have the duty to investigate and report on any violations of said treaty. All are appointments and most are liberals trying to push through an agenda that supersedes the authority of the treaty.

UFI has reported on the CEDAW committee in the past and warned of its impending consequences to national sovereignty and the protection of life and the family.

Today we learn that there are others that are not only concerned with the overreaching of CEDAW, but also with the Human Rights Committee.

A congressman from Michigan, Rep. Thad McCotter, has introduced a resolution asking Congress to condemn two United Nations committees for trying to coerce the Republic of Ireland into reducing or eliminating its constitutionally established abortion restrictions.

House Resolution 1482: was recently introduced by Rep. Thad McCotter along with Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen of Florida and Chris Smith of New Jersey and sits in the House Foreign Affairs Committee awaiting a hearing.

According to H.Res 1482, members of the United Nations Human Rights Committee and the CEDAW, function without formal oversight and are not held accountable to the United Nations and its member states.

Further, the resolution accuses the committees of interpreting the two treaties in a way that requires abortion to be supported and even legalized. It cites five instances in which Ireland was pressured by the committees to change its laws and constitution to meet its demands for legalized abortion.

The twelfth paragraph of the resolution squarely states, "The established pattern of pressure and attempted coercion from the Human Rights Committee and the CEDAW against the democratically elected government of the Republic of Ireland to change its laws restricting abortion represents a microcosm of the efforts of the United Nations Human Rights Treaty System (with the present exception of the Committee on Migrant Workers) to pressure and coerce over 80 states to change their laws restricting abortions."

Clearly, the United States Congress is concerned with the actions and overreaching of the United Nations regulatory committees and also calls into question the use of taxpayer funds to finance United Nations activities, urges member states who restrict abortion to remain steadfast and to remember that "a human being, born or unborn, has an inherent right to life, despite the pressure and coercion by the members of the United Nations."

United States Congressional House Resolutions are non-binding. And while this particular document may not get a hearing or be taken up for a vote because the US Congress is being led by pro-abortion, anti-life elected officials, it holds an important message of hope and life to the world. .  The courage of a few who stand up for families and life should be recognized.
