Baltimore To Make Abortion the Legal Norm

pregnant_woman1On Monday, the Baltimore City Council voted 3-1 in favor of a controversial new measure that would require all pregnancy centers that do not provide abortion or birth control to post a sign stating so. Centers that fail to post a sign will be fined $150 a day until they do so.

Planned Parenthood and NARAL Pro-Choice Maryland, pro-abortion lobbyists, are pushing the bill, claiming that pro-life pregnancy centers “mislead” clients seeking abortion or birth control services by not stating up-front that they do not provide these services. It appears that they are arguing that a woman struggling with the difficult decision of an abortion should not under any circumstances accidentally confront alternative options or views.

However, the symbolic nature of the legislation is even more disturbing. If passed, the bill would establish that pregnancy centers that provide abortions and birth control services are the standard and norm. It would write into legislation that pregnancy centers that do not also take the lives of unborn children are aberrations so threatening to the community they must bear signs stating what they are. Many wonder why the pro-life community is up in arms over the issue—it is only a sign after all—but the implications of the legislation reinforce the dangerous mentality that is moving us further and further away from a society that values life.
