Alaska Supreme Court Jettisons Parental Consent Law
The Alaska Supreme Court ruled that a state law requiring parental or judicial consent for a teenager to obtain an abortion is unconstitutional. The court said the law represents an infringement on a pregnant teen's "constitutional right" to reproductive freedom. The law had been on hold since passage in 1997 due to a legal challenge.
Washington State Law May Do End Run Around Parental Rights
A new bill was passed this year in the Washington state legislature that gave the State Department of Health and the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction the job of creating sex-education curriculum for Washington public school students. Local school boards and parents no longer have a say in which curriculum is taught to students. The same bill also prohibits teaching abstinence-only sex education programs because it requires schools to use the Department of Health's more comprehensive program.
President Bush Promised to Veto Hate Crimes Bill
The controversial hate crimes bill now before the U.S. Senate is headed for a promised veto by President George W. Bush. The bill passed the House earlier this summer. Democratic Massachusetts Senator Ted Kennedy and Republican Oregon Senator Gordon Smith reintroduced the "hate crime" bill, also known as the "Matthew Shepard Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act" into the Senate this July, buried as one of many amendments to the Defense Reauthorization bill.
